FAS PECO customer helps towns turn Trash in to Cash

Waste Zero Inc. has a successful track record of partnering with over 800 cities and towns across North America to start up and manage their solid waste reduction programs.

Through their hands on approach and innovative “pay-as-you-throw” programs, Waste Zero’s municipal partners experience a reduction of trash entering their landfills by up to 44%. Waste Zero clients have saved hundreds of millions USD to date as compared to previous trash disposal strategies.
Waste Zero’s programs are based on some basic concepts that have been proven to be effective in over 20 years of experience:

Fairness residents pay for what they discard and they don’t subsidize anyone else’s trash habits. No more “why should I do this if others don’t?”
Experience more than 99% of the municipal programs started in the past 20 years are still in operation
Recycling keeping waste out of the landfill or incinerators is good for the environment, creates jobs and is more sustainable than traditional disposal methods.

In addition to the innovative management and expertise that Waste Zero offers to their customers, a key element to the success of these programs are the garbage bags which are used by the residents. You can’t have a comprehensive next-generation pay-as-you-throw program without the bags. And ideally, you want to be sure that the bags you get as part of your solution are what you asked for. They must be the right size, the right thickness, the right color, the right percentage of recycled content, right closure type, and the right packaging to ensure the participation in, and ultimate success of, these important programs.

Pay-as-you-throw bags need to be easy to identify (by residents and collection staff), easy to use, and hard to replicate. Trash bags are no good if they break, tear, or fail at the seams. Conversely, bags that can withstand over-stuffing defeat the program’s purpose as the motivation to reduce waste is lost.

According to Kim Baca, WasteZero Assistant Plant Manager, “We needed a robust proven piece of equipment that would give us the flexibility to meet all of our various customers’ needs. Because we are selling to municipalities, bag types, specifications, colors, closures, roll configurations etc. can change a lot order to order. We need quick, accurate repeatable machine set ups. The FAS PECO winder gives us that flexibility. The ability to manufacture coreless and cored rolls on the same winder was a key factor in our decision to purchase that winder.”

Dan Jones, VP of operations for Waste Zero, adds “Another key factor for us in selecting a vendor is their ability to support us in keeping this machine productive in our plant. If we are unable to deliver bags to a municipality for any reason, their program is at risk.  Once they’ve specified a certain bag (color, size, gauge etc.) it becomes very difficult to substitute another one in the program.

“FAS PECO has a 30+ year tradition of commitment to servicing their North American customers. Our winder was shipped earlier than expected. They have a North American service manager who is available to help us with our equipment either by phone, dial up access to our machine’s PLC, or in plant visits. Additionally there is a parts depot in New Jersey with same day service for most of the parts we may need. We even have an automated program on the machine which reminds our personnel when it is time to perform routing preventative maintenance.  All of this enables us to serve OUR customers reliably.”
